Crime Numbers

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation collates crime statistics for all counties in the state. The Bureau’s latest crime data for Williamson County is for 2018. In that year, the county recorded 196 violent crimes and 1,343 property crimes. This represents a 24.1% increase in violent crime rate and an 8.5% decline in property crime rate compared to 2014 figures. A closer look at the reported Part I crimes for 2018 in the county shows that there were 2 murders, 27 rapes, 13 robberies, and 154 aggravated assaults. Williamson County also recorded 160 burglaries, 1,093 larceny thefts, and 90 motor vehicle thefts in 2018.

The most recent five-year crime trend for the county shows that the only crimes to record lower numbers in 2018 compared to 2014 are burglary (29.8%) and larceny (9.8%). In the same period, murder (100%), rape (12.5%), robbery (44.4%), aggravated assault (24.2%), and motor vehicle theft (221.4%) rates went up.

Criminal Records

As the central repository of criminal history information in the state, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) provides background checks for Williamson County. It charges $29 per request. The TBI accepts requests for criminal history information online and by mail. To submit an online request, complete the Online Request Form provided on the agency's website. Card payments are accepted for online requests for background checks. When submitting a mail request, enclose a money order for the fee and send the request to:

Organizations in Williamson County serving children, the elderly, and other groups of vulnerable people can request for fingerprint-based background checks. An ORI number is required for this type of request. The TBI charges $32.65 per request or $30.15 if the subject is a volunteer. Organizations can make this request online at IdentoGo.

To obtain accident and incident reports in Williamson County, contact the police department in the city, borough, or town where the event occurred. For example, the Franklin Police Department provides these reports for the City of Franklin, the county seat.

To request a copy of a police report from the Franklin Police Department, download and complete the Public Records Request Form. Submit the completed form along with a copy of a Tennessee issued ID in person to the Records Section at:

The Records Section is open to the public from Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The requester may also choose to submit the completed form by sending an email to ahardemon@franklintn.gov. The first five pages of copies of police reports are provided free while additional pages cost 50 cents per page.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation maintains a central database of registered sex offenders living in the state. The agency provides public access to this registry online. To find a sex offender living in Williamson County, visit the Sex Offender Registry Search page and fill an address in the county or a subject's name. To view, all the sex offender living within a neighborhood, use the secondary residential search criteria.

Williamson County trial courts are part of the 21st Judicial District of Tennessee. These trial courts include a Circuit Court, a Chancery Court, a General Sessions Court, a Juvenile Court, a Probate Court, and three Municipal Courts. Vital Records

Williamson County's vital records are provided by the State's Department of Health. This Department charges $15 for each copy of vital record.

To obtain a certified copy of a divorce certificate, complete and sign the divorce application form. Attached a photocopy of a government-issued ID or any acceptable ID alternatives, and submit the request either in person or by mail. For mail-in request, include a check or money order for the appropriate fee and send it to:

For in-person requests, visit the address above. The Vital Records entrance is located at the Rosa Parks Blvd. side of the building. The office is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. While it opens by 8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the office closes later at 6:00 p.m.

Cash is accepted for copy fees when requesting for divorce records in person. Alternatively, the requester may use the kiosk located at the office to make a card payment. Payment at the kiosk attracts an additional non-refundable $4 processing fee.

To request for other vital records, follow the same procedure as for requesting a divorce certificate. The fee for a birth, death, or marriage certificate is also the same as for a divorce certificate. Complete and submit a Certified Copy of Certificate of Birth, Death, or Marriage.

The Department is open from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Birth certificates from 1949 to the present are available at the local health department. To obtain a copy of a birth record, complete the application for birth certificate (also provided in Spanish), and submit it at the health department. Similarly, when requesting a death certificate complete the application form (also provided in Spanish) and submit it at the office.
