Sumner County crime statistics are maintained by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Bureau’s latest crime data for Sumner County is for the year 2018 when it recorded 648 violent crimes and 3,031 property crimes. These represent 27.5% and 19.7% jumps in violent and property crime rates respectively when compared to 2014 figures. A closer look at the reported Part I crimes for 2018 in the county shows that there were 8 murders, 129 rapes, 64 robberies, and 446 aggravated assaults. Sumner County also recorded 326 burglaries, 2,473 larceny thefts, and 232 motor vehicle thefts in 2018.
The latest five-year crime trend for the county indicates that the only crimes to show a dip between 2014 and 2018 is burglary (30.3%). In the same period, other crime rates rose: murder (166.7%), rape (4.88%), robbery (166.7%), aggravated assault (24.8%), larceny theft (26.4%), and motor vehicle theft (118.9%).

To obtain an incident or accident report in Sumner County, contact the police department in the city, borough, or town where the event occurred. There is also a kiosk machine located in the visitation lobby. You must have a government-issued I.D. to use this kiosk which accepts debit, credit, or cash. Sumner County trial courts are part of the 18th Judicial District of Tennessee. The Circuit Court Clerk holds all records for the county’s Circuit and General Sessions Courts and makes them available to the public for review online. Vital Records
The Tennessee Department of Health provides all vital records for the state. A copy of each vital record costs $15 and an additional $5 for each expedited request. To obtain a certified copy of a Sumner County divorce certificate, complete and sign the divorce application form, attach a photocopy of a government-issued ID or any ID alternatives acceptable by the office, and submit the request in person or by mail to:

For in-person requests, visit the office anytime between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The office closes late on Tuesdays and Thursdays by 6:00 p.m. Cash or card payment is accepted for in-person requests. Card payment attracts an additional non-refundable processing fee of $4.

Are Property Records Open to the Public in Sumner County?
Under the State of Tennessee Freedom of Information Act, all recorded property documents in Sumner County are available for public viewing. People can view and print copies of property records by submitting a request to the office of Sumner County Register of Deeds either online or in-person at the office.
Where and How to Find Property Records in Sumner County
The office of the Sumner County Register of Deeds is responsible for recording and maintaining copies of legal documents on land, mortgages, easements, and other property-related transactions in the county. Certified records dating back to September 1989 and property deeds dating back to 1786 are available to the public from the Register's office.
Requesters may search and download records for 15 cents per copy and $2.15 for plat copies at the office. Mail requests for copies cost 15 cents per page and $4.50 for plat copies. These digitized documents are saved on the office's database and are available for viewing via the link provided on the Sumner County Register of Deed website.
