Criminal Records

The Blount County Sheriff's Office is charged with maintaining law and order in the county, as well as generating data and managing records pertaining to criminal activity within county limits. However, all requests for criminal background records and checks are processed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which serves as the primary custodian of criminal history information of the state.

How to Get Criminal Records

The Criminal Justice Information Services Division of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation processes requests for criminal records from organizations and members of the general public. In compliance with state laws, members of the public may request name-based criminal history checks on any individual and personal fingerprint-based checks. Name-based search requests may be made online or via mail.

Online requests may be made using the Tennessee Open Records Information Services. The requesting party may sign up using the Requestor Information Form and proceed to request a record check on the system. Requestors will be charged $29 per subject plus any applicable credit card fees.

To request records via mail, the requesting party is required to send a written request to the Bureau stating the name of the subject, their date of birth, social security numbers and other unique identifiers. Requests must be accompanied by a cheque or money order payment of $29 and a stamped, self-addressed envelope and sent to:

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
901 R.S Gass Blvd.,
Nashville, TN 37216
Phone: (615) 744-4057

Qualified organizations including businesses and licensing agencies may request comprehensive fingerprint-based checks from the Bureau. This will require the organization to have or obtain an Originating Agency Identifier and proceed to schedule an appointment with the approved fingerprint vendor. In such cases, the applicable fee is dependent on the requestor and the reason for requesting a record.

Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
